Use Case of the Week: AI-Powered Operating Room Utilization Optimization
Health System: Erlanger Health System (Academic health system based in Chattanooga, Tennessee)
Erlanger Health System deployed an AI-powered operating room optimization platform that analyzes surgical schedules, block utilization, and real-time capacity to improve OR efficiency. The system identifies unused surgical block time and automatically releases underutilized slots so they can be reassigned to other surgeons or cases. This helps fill scheduling gaps and improves coordination across surgical teams without increasing staff or infrastructure.
As a result, Erlanger added about 220 additional surgical cases per month compared to the previous year and gained nearly 12 additional OR hours per room per month. The initiative improves patient access to surgery while maximizing existing operating room resources.
“Healthcare AI will only deliver real value when it moves beyond point solutions and starts orchestrating entire workflows. Until AI can pass context across scheduling, clinical, and operational systems the way humans do, it will remain just another tool rather than transforming how care is delivered.”
